Gas cap leash install location

I just got a new gas cap which has the handy leash/tether attached to it. I’m having trouble finding where it attaches to. The snap is circular. There is a small opening under the neck but it’s square. This is an OEM part so it should attach somewhere. Thanks for any help.

i went out and looked at mine and the tether is attached to the gas door. and the hole is round.
