I have been having the same problem with my cobalt since bringing it home. It only happens occasionally, more frequently within the last week and most intensely this afternoon. Lemme start off by saying im a new driver as far as a stick shift and my knowledge of vehicles is sparse at best. Anything anyone suggests will be super appreciated -- im lost right now.

Excuse my rudimentary driving terms.

Today I stopped at a traffic light and sat in neutral. When the light changed, I disengaged the clutch, shifted into first, and pressed on the gas until that "catch" point, at which the car is supposed to have a little more power. Well it felt sluggish but I am an imperfect driver, assumed it was me, disengaged the clutch and went to second. Again it felt sluggish and I never felt the catch. At this point my RPMS are at 3k. Not feeling any power and cruising at 20, i shift to third and still get no power. As I continue to shift in search of a working gear my RPMS dont drop. Let me explain as best I can for clarity : when i let off the gas they fall slowly but no matter what gear I go to they never fall low enough for the car to get that usual jolt of forward motion.

I started smelling burning and pulled over immediately before red lining. Turned off the car and called for a ride and advice. By the time my ride came the car was working fine again and later on tonight I just drove around the block without a problem.

Someone said transmission computer. Clutch. Flywheel.

Does anyone know what could be wrong? Please ask any questions if it wasn't clear. Thanks again for your time

No, but the response is Lol. You probably glassed your clutch a little.

Also welcome! Feel free to post an intro in the introduction section. Have a look around, there's some good info here.
Thank you so much.... I was worried like my cars life was over.

I understand all of that advice except where the poster says not to sidestep the clutch. What exactly is sidestepping the clutch?

Basically it's dropping the clutch. Like holding the clutch on the floor, then moving your foot to the left allowing it to slam back up. It's not nice to the clutch plates.

Just an FYI, if you find the clutch is bad, get it from a gm dealer. Last time I did one, autozone wanted almost 300. The dealership sells a factory one for $180. There maybe some other places cheaper, I haven't replaced one in awhile, I prefer OEM parts when they are reasonable. $180 is not bad. I have put some cheapies in Hondas and Hyundai's over the years, and though they move, they never fell right...
