this is gonna suck lol... sourced from gm global connect. anything like -this- means i added it in.
Tools Required
J 45027 Tensioner Tool -not required-
Removal Procedure
•Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement.
•Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
•Remove the No. 1 cylinder spark plug. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement.
•Rotate the crankshaft in the engine rotational direction clockwise, until the No. 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke.
•Remove the engine front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement.
-this is the front engine cover-
•Lower the vehicle.
Important: The timing chain tensioner must be removed to unload chain tension before the timing chain is removed. If not removed, the timing chain will become cocked and it will be difficult to remove.
•Remove the timing chain tensioner.
•Remove the fixed timing chain guide access plug.
•Remove the fixed timing chain guide.
•Remove the upper timing chain guide.
•Use a 24 mm wrench to hold the camshafts from turning.
-there is a tool made for our cams that fits around these hex parts of the cam made for a wrench. they sit on the cams and keep them from rotating. very cheap and simple tool-
•Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt and discard.
•Remove the exhaust camshaft sprocket.
•Remove the timing chain tensioner guide.
•Remove the intake camshaft sprocket bolt and discard.
•Remove the intake camshaft sprocket.
•Remove the timing chain through the top of the cylinder head.
•Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
•Remove the oil nozzle and bolt.
•Remove the balance shaft drive chain tensioner.
•Remove the adjustable balance shaft chain guide.
•Remove the small balance shaft drive chain guide.
•Remove the upper balance shaft drive chain guide.
Important: It may ease removal of the balance shaft drive chain to get all of the slack in the chain between the crankshaft and water pump sprockets.
•Remove the balance shaft drive chain.
