leaving it in gear can put stress on the transmission and clutch if you rest it on the gears. If you are going to leave it in gear, hold the clutch and shut off the car then pull the parking brake and last release the clutch. Leaving the car in gear is just a fail safe for the brakes if they fail you rely on the compression in 1 cylinder to hold the weight of the car, most time it just turns over the engine slowly and not actually hold the car. I prefer neutral just so there is no chance of stress on the trans and I always forget it's in gear and stall on startup lolz i hate losing cool points for that.

i tell ya what
iv owned many of cars. and my pontiac G5 GT has disc breaks all around. this makes for a useless parking brake. in fact mine does not even hold on flat ground if i turn my wheel my car rolls away. had the wind puch me about 10 feet one day luckly i was in the car and knew this was happening..

that being said. what holds a auto from rollin away? the gears being in park
so leaving your stick in gear will not hurt it.
in fact its better for taking off on a hill. ever park a auto on a big hill and its hard to get it back in drive? then it rolls back then you go and its a lot of strange sounds. thats stress on everything from the gears to the motor mounts.

with a 5 speed its less stress altho the cluch is taking a bit of wear taking off on a hill but its good for it unless you burnin it

either way . i leave all my cars in gear even my cobalt LT (has drums in the back) you could pull up on the parking brake at 200 and stop the car .. i havnt tried this but rolling into parking spots and being used to the g5 i pull up slowly on the parking brake as im jumping out ... im ninja style like that... but doing this in the cobalt leaves for chipped teeth on the wheel.

i also have a 98 sunfire that i also always leave in gear, no issues

as far as flat ground. i also always pull the parking brake and leave in 1st gear on flat ground.

never any issues of loseing cool points on start up tho. first thing i do befor i turn the key.
foot on cluch shifter to center then turn key.
good pratice to get into.

you are "supposed" to set the parking brake before releasing the service brakes while parking an automatic transmission.
