Fixed! (For now....)
Sorry for taking so long to follow up. I ended up replacing both front speakers with a cheap set from local car audio shop. They told me that they have a pile of junk chevy speakers in the back (apparently I wasn't the first person to bring a similar chevy speaker in). The speakers cost me $25 for the set. The doors panels were pretty easy to remove (thanks to YouTube). I was able to cut the factory speakers out of their original mounting bracket and fit the JVCs into the same bracket (a little extra work) but this allowed a snug fit and I did not have to drill any holes. I did have to trim a bit a of the plastic off the inside of the door panel. I also used some foam rubber (window sealer) to give a little cushion and keep the new speakers protected. I thoroughly checked all wiring for the speakers and could not find any places where moisture had entered harnesses, nor were there any loose connections. I did however find a spot on the passenger side where the factory speaker wires were rubbing a rough spot on the inside of the door and bare wire was visible. I replaced this wire and applyied hear shrink to all wires in the area. I was also able to file down the rough spot. More than two weeks have gone by and no problems. I can provide photos of the speaker swap and how I used the factory speaker mounts if anyone is interested. I also belive that the the passenger speaker probably failed first and she just did not notice it until the driver also faile (seems much more likely than both failing at same time.
