Center Console Lid?

This may be a stupid question, but I can't seem to find an answer for it anywhere. What is the point of the clips on the underside of the center console lid? They seem to hold something into the indentations, but what's supposed to go in there?

I use them to hold a pen and pencil. Keeps them from rattling around in the bin where I keep a little notepad and registration and insurance card.

At least you have one to wonder about. My car doesn't have one at all.
