That was my thought. I may be doing this all wrong lol. I am supposed to check for less than 5ohm between the ignition coil plug (purple wire) and pin #55 on the x1 connector? If that's correct I get 0ohm and no continuity between them.

If you don't have continuity then that wire is broken somewhere.

Yeah, I was measuring across the brown wire and pin 55. I re-read your post a few times and thought I did it wrong (pretty sure I did)
That's a genius use for safety pins.

0.0 on purple. Yeah thanks. When I saw the size of the holes I would be probing it sorta just came to me.

Touching your test leads together should get you 0.0, holding them apart would be --
So is the wire good?
My DMM shows 0.L with test leads apart and 00.3 with them together (stupid Walmart DMM) I am getting 0.L
I happend to check continuity between pin 55 and my valve cover (ground) and got an intermittent tone. Pretty sure purple wire is damaged.

All the wiring connectors on the cobalt come apart. If you remove the purple part off the inside of the coil connector, you will see that little plastic fingers hold the wires in place. Push the finger back and gently pull on the wire. Then get a another wire from another harness, it don't have to be the same color just put in the right location and then you can rule out the wire, and the connection to the prongs. Where as if you just slice the wire(more problems later) the connectors could still be at fault.
The ECM and wiring harness are located in an impact zone for a front end accident. I would look there for a problem first. You can remove the back of the connectors for the ECM and look for signs of bent, pinched or repaired wires. You didn't state any history of the car, I would look for signs of it being in an accident. It's rare to have a problem with the harness or ECM, unless something has caused it.
I have repaired many of these cars, and often the harness or the connector blocks on the ecm get damaged. It so easy to just replace the back covers on them, and all looks good. Can't always see if a single wire has been pinched.
