Hey guys, just picked up a Flowmaster 40 muffler at my local AutoZone amd I was just wondering...

I got the 2.25" inlet/outlet, that's the correct size for my 2009 Cobalt LT correct?

(According to AutoZone site it's correct: "40 Series(TM). 2.25" offset inlet / center outlet. 4" x 9.75" x 13" case dimensions and 19" overall length. Aluminized steel.")

Also I bought a muffler tip I wanted to be welded on the outlet, but the chrome tip I got seems waaay too long. It is like 9" long, and at the beginning of it, it has 2 screws (kinda looks like the greater/less than symbol: >) - did I get the wrong size? (or can I have it cut and welded onto the outlet; removing the screws?) What are the screws for anyway?

I will add pics as soon as I can so you can see what I'm talking about... but my camera's broken on my phone :(

Thanks in advance! - zmag

Edit 1:

Pics of 9" muffler tip label & tip held against outlet:

First 2 pics are of tip's label - Last 2 pics are of me holding the tip against the outlet to show that it looks completely flush against the outlet's rim.

Pic 3 shows the 2 screws, is this supposed to be a tip that slides over an exsisting muffler outlet then screwed in to hold it into place? - The lable reads it fits tubes from 1.75" to 2.25", but as seeing as the outlet is 2.25" it doesn't slide over or inside the FlowMaster's outlet... looks like it must be cut down to size and welded on the outlet...

Anyone have a 40 Series with a tip? If you do, how did you go about installing it (and what length tip did you use?) and do you think my cutting/welding idea will work? or should I get a different tip? (if so, what length tip should I get?) I just want a simple circular chrome tip on the end, no other style...

---

Edit 2:

Can anyone post what I should pay (roughly) to have this muffler/tip installed at an exhaust shop/garage?

Also, how does this muffler sound on an LT? I read it's a little aggressive-sounding; I have the stock intake right now, just curious if it'll make it sound a little nicer.

And what intake should I go for, a CAI or the K&N Typhoon? Any suggestions?

I had a 40 on my LT, really loud without a resonator.

That tip is designed to be used with smaller pipes by using the screws or welding it onto larger pipes. A 9" tip is super long for our cars, you can have it cut down and welded if it's what you want, it'll look a lot nicer.

Yeah I'll definitely have to have it cut down, but will it look ok with it welded directly to the outlet's edge? or is it supposed to be a little larger diameter and slid over the outlet and welded directly to the muffler's "base"?

Just want to get this right the first time! This will prolly be the only mod I do to the exterior (besides my rain guards I have on already) so I want it to go smoothly and look nice. Not sure if it'll look goofy if it's welded to the outlet _right_ on the edge (it'll look similar to the pics, but cut down so the tip sticks out like half an inch from the back bumper)

Thanks for any input!

P.S. Oh, and I'm not gonna remove the resonator (or anything for that matter) I just want it to have a subtle rumble, nothing too loud. :p and I'll take some pics when it's finished so you can lemme know what you think :)

I'd suggest cutting a bit of the muffler exit off and a little off the exhaust tip. That way you have the maximum amount of that chrome tip exposed. You're not going to see the muffler bits if it's done correctly.

Ohh I didn't even think to cut some of the muffler's outlet off - that's a good idea thank you!

http://www.autoanything.com/exhausts-mufflers/50A29A169A1.aspx

I found this page that has some advice about welding tips.

"When buying a new custom exhaust exhaust tip tip, size is very important. Not only must the exhaust tip match your tailpipe tailpipe, it needs to look great too."

---

Inlet Size

The inlet size of your exhaust tip must match the diameter of your existing tailpipe tailpipe for a proper fit. All of our exhaust tips specify the inlet sizes available for each model, so keep your size in mind when ordering. For example, if your tailpipe tailpipe has a 3" diameter, choose an inlet diameter of 3". Remember, your tailpipe tailpipe may already have a tip, so be sure to measure the tailpipe tailpipe, not the old tip.

Outlet Size

This measurement is the size of the tip's exhaust end. Many automobiles have bumper and cowling cut-outs for factory exhaust tips. Be sure the outlet size of your new tip will clear these cut-outs to avoid any damage or having to trim your body panels.

Length

The final measurement to consider when choosing your exhaust tips is length. You want your exhaust tips to be seen, but you don't want to create a flaming-hot trip hazard for pedestrians. Make sure to choose a tip that's long enough to vent the exhaust from under your vehicle, but short enough to keep it looking cool.

In the After pic, it looks like they cut the Before tailpipe down a bit before they welded it on - or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

Also, the tip I bought was from AutoZone; and someone posted that theirs kept rusting because it was a cheap brand. I think I'm going to order a brand name tip (Borla, Magnaflow etc.) - I don't want a crap tip to look like shiz in a couple weeks!

One more question: What length of the tip should I go for? I know the 9 inch tip I have is too long, how about 6"?

Some tips (like this one: http://m.autoanything.com/exhausts-mufflers/gibson-rolled-exhaust-tip)

gibson_rolled_tip.jpg

I like that style, but obviously I can't cut it down and it's 6" long. The tip is 50 bucks (almost what I paid for the muffler itself) so I wanna make sure I get the right length!

That tip is 2.25" inlet (correct size) 6" long and a 3" outlet - i like the 3" outlet i think it'll look good as opposed to a straight 2.25" tip, but the lenght is what scares me!

Or this one:

2.25" Inlet, 3 x 4.75" Outlet, 4.75" Length
