Hello everyone, how's it going? My name is Luis and a first time poster here. I have a 2007 cobalt that i miss dearly and it has about 105k miles on it. Not sure if this post is in the right category or not so sorry if it is moderators. I was wondering what the price estimate would be for a remanufactored engine would be. Let me tell you my story first, it's a bit lengthy so be warned. My insurance was trying to screw me but I have them beat.

It all started a month ago when I was driving home from work. Some dude in front of me on the freeway hit some tire tread which flew up in the air then came down at me and went under my carriage. Man I almost wanted to swerve, but I didn't cause I would lose control of the car so I just let it hit me. Needless to say, a bunch of problems immediately started transpiring. The nearest exit was 2 miles away and I couldn't pull over due to freeway construction. My car started overheating and the temp gauge was going upwards of 230 and I was getting anxious. Fumes and the scent of burning oil started coming from the passengers side of the undercarriage and I knew I was screwed.

Finally I pull over on the exit and turn it off and the CPU started flashing auto cooling and the fan went on. I examined underneath the car and saw a huge puddle of oil and coolant and man I was angry. License plate was gone and front bumper was cracked. Tow truck gets there, lifts it up and takes it to my house because it was 1:30 am and the weekend. Big oily mess on the tow truck and at home when I parked it. I call and make the claim with my insurance and reported everything that happened.

The next day I examine it some more and noticed my radiator was bent in and I couldn't believe how bent in it was. Anyways the adjuster comes the following Monday and estimates the repairs at 1800 (under comprehensive) so I'm like cool. I take it to a collision shop he recommended and then I wait for 2 weeks. They replaced the front bumper, cover for it, absorber, grille assembly, radiator, fan assembly and wiring, and condenser. Parts and labor were 2300 all I paid was a 250 deductible (thank god). But the thing I told that shop from the beginning and the appraiser was to find out where the oil leak was coming from because it was leaking very, very badly.

The repair shop calls me finally saying they finished but they can't fix the oil leak because they thought it was coming from the valve cover and the appraiser was saying it wasn't accident related. B.S!!!! I was pissed so i raised hell with him, his supervisor and my agent. Whatever so they told me I would have to prove it on my own and to take it to the dealership. So I take it to Rotolo Chevrolet and tell them everything. As its sitting outside its leaking a HUGE amount of oil again and the service advisor was surprised the collision shop let me take it like that and I told him they said it was okay to drive for a few miles.

Anyways it's been there for the past three weeks just getting a diagnosis. Apparently they're so backed up in the service department my car has just been rotting there. And also it was leaking so much oil they couldn't pin point it and they used a special dye and still no luck. They then asked me if I wanted to continue they would have to tear it down. So finally today they did and discovered a cracked cylinder head and said there was coolant mixed in with the oil and it is accident related. Booyah I thought to myself. So I called the appraiser and he was dumbfounded and said that when it overheated it probably cracked it. No sh!t!

So now the manager of this appraiser tells me they're probably gonna have put in a used engine which they will cover completely or rebuild the engine which they will only cover 70 percent of it and the rest is on me. So I'm wondering which would be the better route to go? It's Friday night and I haven't heard back from the dealership or my insurance company and they're both closed on the weekend. Is a rebuilt engine very pricey or should I just go with a used engine? As I said my cobalt was an 07 with 105K miles on it.

Sorry for the long post! I did warn you though lol

Hello Luis. I'm Luis as well lol. Drop the used engine in it. Any problem will be covered by their warranty on the used engine. And figured there was problems since u said the rad cracked. Most likely hit a few oil lines and bam leaking oil. Starvation from oil and coolant = disaster. Your head was toast. If not warpage then cracked . The used engine should have some warranty with it and shop expenses paid. Anything gone wrong its on them. Also you are most likely getting less miles on it.
