So My 2005 cobalt has gotten really loud when I accelerate. The only thing I could think of is the muffler.

My brother is very good at fixing cars but doesn't have much experience with mufflers.

Does anyone have any experience with changing the muffler on this car? , is it hard? , whats involved?

Also, which one do I need?

I was looking at a quiet one but I don't think those are the right fittings. Only one I saw that looks right is a flow master , but I don't want my car loud and obnoxious.

Any advice or help is appreciated. Id really like to get this fixed.

If you are sure the sound is coming out the tailpipe you're going to need a sawzall or torch, and a welder to attach the exhaust hangers to the new muffler. I'd suggest taking it to a shop for that, shouldn't be that expensive.

I doubt the muffler is the cause though. The flex pipe up near the motor does fail on some cars.

Thanks for the response . Can either of those be done without welding? Would rather spend 50 to 100 bucks rather than 4-500.

Also. Is there any way to tell what's actually causing the loud noise.

It shouldn't be that much, I had a whole exhaust made for $200.

You can hacksaw it off and get a slip-fit muffler to put on. Then jerry-rig the hangers.

Have a look around under the car with it running, look for any exhaust that comes out anywhere but the tailpipe. You can have a friend rev it up if need be. Make sure you block the wheels and that the car is in NEUTRAL or PARK.
